CARDAMOM-FluxVal version 1.0: a FLUXNET-based validation system for CARDAMOM carbon and water flux estimates

Abstract. Land–atmosphere carbon and water exchanges have large uncertainty in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs). Using observations to reduce TBM structural parametric errors is a critical priority for both understanding accurately predicting fluxes. Recent implementations of the Bayesian CARbon DAta–MOdel fraMework (CARDAMOM) yielded key insights into ecosystem cycling. CARDAMOM estimates parameters an associated intermediate complexity (Data Assimilation Linked Ecosystem Carbon – DALEC). These analyses informed by co-located C​​​​​​​ H2O flux exhibited considerable skill representing variability assimilated withheld observations. DALEC been continuously developed accommodate new scientific challenges expanding variety observational constraints. However, so far there has no concerted effort globally systematically validate performance across individual model–data fusion configurations. Here we use FLUXNET 2015 dataset ensemble 200+ eddy covariance tower sites formulate benchmarking framework (photosynthesis net C exchange) (evapotranspiration) (CARDAMOM-FluxVal version 1.0). We present concise set metrics evaluate against photosynthesis, CO2 exchange, evapotranspiration estimates. further demonstrate potential tailored evaluations categorizing terms (i) land-cover types, (ii) monthly, annual, mean fluxes, (iii) length assimilation data. The system along with driver files provided can be readily repeated support intercomparison between existing model configurations formulation, development, testing structures.
